ADF Secretary-General Meets UAE Minister for Higher Education and Scientific Research, Arab Democracy Foundation A Founding Member of the Gender Institute
ADF and UAE Writers’ Union joined efforts to organize a consultative meeting of experts on 13 October 2010 in Abu Dhabi to prepare for the launching of a regional institute specializing in gender issues. This project is one of the main outputs of the 2009 Forum for the Future, which was held in Marrakech, Morocco. The institute headquarters will be hosted by the Kingdom of Morocco, and substantially funded by the UAE.
The meeting was inaugurated by Dr. Habib Al Sayegh, Chairman of the UAE Writers’ Union, with the participation of the ADF Secretary-General, Mr. Mohsen Marzouk and a pool of researchers and civil society representatives from the Arab world and Turkey, such as as Former Iraqi Human Rights Minister, Mr. Bakhtiar Amin, Dr. Mensour Agkun, director TESEV in Turkey, and the Jordanian civil activist, Lamis Nasser.
The meeting participants discussed the objectives and practical steps for establishing and activating the institute. They concluded by agreeing on 29 and 30 November 2010 as the dates for holding the international conference to launch the Gender Institute in Abu Dhabi. The conference will be supported by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and organized by the Writers’ Union in partnership with ADF.
The meeting also resulted in the announcement of the formation of a working group to work on the launching of the institute, of which ADF is a member. These efforts are part of the implementation of the 2009 Forum for the Future recommendations, and in support for the next session of the Forum which will be hosted the State of Qatar in a few months.
On the sidelines of the consultative meeting Secretary-General, Mr. Mohsen Marzouk and the rest of the delegation, met with His Excellency Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chancellor of the University of the United Arab Emirates, His Highness Sheikh Nahyan Mubarak Al-Nahyan, who took advantage of this opportunity to send his greetings to Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned, expressing his admiration for HH’s very considerable efforts in the field of education and scientific research.
