The Forum for the Future sub-ministerial meeting was held in Ottawa, Canada, bringing together senior officials of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the member states, in addition to representatives of the selected civil society organizations, including the tripartite coordinating committee for Forum for the Future non-governmental process. The participants and the senior officials reviewed the results and reports of the three regional preparatory workshops for the forum which took place in Doha, Istanbul, and Beirut. The participants discussed the main recommendation of the Doha workshop to establish a regional center specialized in research and capacity- building with regards to conflict resolution and democratic transition, and called for the preparation of a feasibility study for the project. Emphasis was also laid on the Istanbul Workshop’s main recommendation stating the “Private Sector’s Role in Social Responsibility,” and the civil society call for the governments to create favourable fiscal and legislative frameworks that incentivize Corporate Social Responsibility.
Moreover, participants stressed the Beirut workshop’s main recommendation that concrete steps should be taken to create youth exchange programs, to build youth’s capacities and develop the scope of their participation in the public sphere, by benefitting from regional and international experiences.
Civil society representatives called upon governments to execute the recommendations of previous Forums for the Future, specifically the project to establish a Gender Institute. In this context, the ADF Secretary-General urged for “the implementation of the selected recommendations from regional workshops, so that the Doha Forum’s output is concrete, practical and meets everyone’s ambitious expectations”. He also confirmed that “civil society organizations will continue working with the same responsible, constructive, and open spirit. We hope that collaboration with civil society shall be in the same spirit, and shall be based on trust and binding national interests.”
The Secretary-General additionally called for the creation of a permanent coordinating committee, to follow up on the Forum for the Future non-governmental process. The announcement of its creation is to take place in Doha’s upcoming forum. Some of the objectives of the committee would be the accumulation of experiences, and communication with the organizers of upcoming editions of the Forum.
